PETALING JAYA: Bersih 2.0 confirms that it will be holding a Bersih 5 rally to protest the issues affecting 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
However, Bersih chairman Maria Chin Abdullah said that no date had been fixed yet.
“We need to do awareness at the present moment. At the ground level, the impact of 1MDB is not fully understood. We need to raise awareness so that people will be able to understand this cannot go on anymore,” she said at a press conference on Wednesday.
She added that Bersih 4’s institutional reform agenda was still valid.
“We have not confirmed the form or venue of the rally yet. The form and venue is not our main priority yet, awareness is important to us,” said Maria.
She said that Bersih strongly feels that there is a need to build a united Malaysia by gathering more diverse groups and stakeholders for the rally.
Maria added that that Bersih supported the #TangkapMalaysianOfficial1 rally planned for Aug 27.
“Bersih 2.0, together with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and concerned citizens have initiated various weekly actions to protest against the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal. This includes a planned #TangkapMalaysianOfficial1 protests by youth on Aug 27,” said Maria.
She added that not protesting was not an option.
“As citizens, we must make a strong stand against grand corruption and betrayal of trust,” said Maria.
She said that Bersih 4 showed the awareness of the people.
“That is the biggest achievement we have ever made, but we need to move further,” she said.
