SANDAKAN – A 70-year-old woman died after being hit by a car while trying to save her granddaughter who had dashed across the road at Batu 2, Jalan Lintas Utara here yesterday.
District police chief ACP Zabidi Mohd Zain said in the incident around 2 pm, the deceased identified only as Garatiah suffered serious head injuries and passed away upon arrival at Duchess Of Kent Hospital.
He said Garatiah’s granddaughter Nurbayah Saptal aged five also sustained head injuries and was being warded in the intensive care unit at the same hospital.
“Initial investigations revealed that a Perodua Myvi car was heading towards Batu 7 from Sandakan when it knocked down the two victims who were in the middle of the road at the time,” he told Bernama.
Zabidi said the driver of the vehicle aged 30, rushed the victims to the hospital before lodging a police report. – Bernama
