LENGGONG – The Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry is ready to consider the Perak state government’s proposal to make Tasik Raban here one of the main freshwater fishing farms in the country, says its minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.
He said the ministry would discuss the matter with the Fisheries Department as the lake contained various types of fish species.
“Tasik Raban and Sungai Perak on the whole are among valuable producers of freshwater fish, because both have many freshwater fish species of high potential.
“We will look into it as it will also help improve the capacity of local fishermen in terms of freshwater fishing,” he told reporters after opening Sungai Lenggong Fish Festival at Dataran Tasik Raban here, today.
Ahmad Shabery said 103,000 tonnes or RM789 million worth of freshwater fish was produced nationwide last year, with 35 per cent or 40,000 tonnes coming from Perak alone.
Speaking on the programme held today, Shabery said it was part of the government’s efforts to promote freshwater fish, which is an important protein-rich alternative to sea fish and livestock. – BERNAMA
