ALOR SETAR – The government desires to create not only intelligent but also smart people, said new Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.
Smart people were those who not only achieved distinction in examinations but also knew what was happening in their surroundings and knew how to think rationally, he said.
He also said that it was necessary for everyone to have a high degree of awareness about the importance of education to ensure that society was on the right track.
If there was a high degree of awareness about the importance of education, problems such as truancy, drug abuse and disinterest in studies would not have to be borne only by schools but by everyone, he said when launching the centennial celebration of Sekolah Kebangsaan Jabi here last night.
At the event, Mahdzir was presented with the 01 membership card of the SK Jabi Alumni Association.
SK Jabi Alumni Association chairman Rusinah Ahmad said several programmes had been drawn up for the celebration, including a two-day carnival on Nov 13 and 14 in conjunction with the centennial of SK Jabi on Nov 15.
The setting up of the school alumni association on March 1 was the brainchild of Mahdzir, with the aim of allowing former students to meet in a more organised manner. – BERNAMA
