ALOR SETAR – A 10-year-old girl is feared drowned after being swept away while bathing with a younger sibling in Sungai Kuala Kedah, near Kampung Sematang Pinang here, Friday.
Noraini Maisarah Musa went to the river with sister Ayu Wan Mira and a friend, Nor Alisya Natasya Yahya, both age 9. However, Nor Alisya Natasya did not go into the water and stood on the river banks to watch her friends.
Nor Alisya said it was normal for the three of them to go to the river, and would play in shallow waters there.
“The river is just nearby a factory where we always go to earn some pocket money by cleaning mussels, but I did not go into the water today and just watch them from the river bank.
“They were bathing in the river and was swept away by waves from a boat which was passing the area,” she said when met by reporters after the incident.
She said a man on the boat heard her screams for help and jumped into the river and managed to save only Ayu Wan Mira.
Meanwhile, a spokesman at Jalan Raja fire and rescue station said the search for the missing girl resumed at 7 am today after it was halted 11 pm yesterday. – BERNAMA
