KUALA LUMPUR – Santiago Giraldo of Colombia is ready to give Nick Kyrgios of Australia a run for his money in the first round of 2015 Malaysian Open Tennis Championships (MOKL), beginning Monday.
Giraldo said he is optimistic to give a tough fight despite half-Malaysian, Kyrgios having the advantage as a seventh seeded player in the nine-day tournament to be held at the Putra Indoor Stadium, Bukit Jalil.
The qualifying round is held today and tomorrow.
Giraldo or Kyrgios is scheduled to face Tatsuma Ito of Japan or Jarkko Nieminen of Finland in the second round of the US$1,041,540 (RM4.588 million) tournament.
“It will be a tough one… he (Kyrgios) is a very good player… I have to play good to beat him. The tournament is very strong.
“There are a lot of quality of players in this tournament, so it is good for me to be with them,” he told reporters after the draw ceremony at the Putra Indoor Stadium here today.
The draw for the top players of the tournament held today saw a balanced distribution of strength when the first seeded player, David Ferrer of Spain, second seeded Felicano Lopez of Spain, third seeded, Ivo Karlovic of Croatia and fouth seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria earned a bye in the first round. – BERNAMA
