ALOR SETAR – The Gerakan party is confident that it can regain some seats in Penang in the next General Election, according to its president Datuk Mah Siew Keong.
Although the party had failed to win any seat in the state during the 2008 and 2013 General Elections, he was optimistic that the situation would change in the next election following the implementation of a few new strategies.
“We (Gerakan) have prepared some strategies to win the seats, but to form the state government (of Penang) will be quite challenging,” he told reporters after inaugurating the party’s building in Kedah today.
According to Mah, who is also a minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, prparations to face the 14th General Election which could be held in 2017 or 2018 should begin from now and not be left till the last minute.
He said among the new strategies Gerakan would use in facing the next General Election would be to choose candidates much earlier, which is around two years before the elections were held.
Mah said although there were many people in the party who were uneasy with the strategy to choose candidates earlier, it would still be implemented as it was beneficial to the party.
“With the candidates chosen earlier, it would allow them to prepare to solve all the problems much earlier and they would not have to wait till the last moment before the elections,” he said.
He said Gerakan would also give prominence to youth and professionals in fielding candidates in the next elections. – BERNAMA
