Fourth Row Start For Khairul At Le Mans

in Latest/Sports

HONDA Team Asia’s Khairul Idham Pawi will start the second round of the FIM CEV Moto3 Junior World Championship from fourth row having suffered a crash in the qualifying sessions at Le Mans Circuit in France on Friday.

The reigning PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship WIRA champion was hoping to emulate his Portugal form where he secured second row but crashed in the first qualifying (QP1) due to low track temperatures and was unable to complete the session.

Making things worse for the budding Malaysian rider, he suffered an injury from that crash and it saw him riding in pain in QP2 four hours later. Even so, Khairul proved his determination as he improved his best lap time by two seconds, clocking his quickest lap in 1’45.181s in the combined timesheet.

The field will be headed by Junior Team Estrella Galicia rider Arón Canet (SPA-Honda) who posted the best lap in 1’44.204s, with the riders responsible for defending the interests of Junior Team VR46 and Aspar Team Mahindra alongside him: Nicolò Bulega (ITA-KTM) and David Sanchis (SPA-Mahindra).

“Our campaign here did not go too well as I crashed in the QP1 and could only complete eight laps. That crash caused some pain to my leg and was not able to ride at maximum in QP2. Nevertheless I’m grateful we could improve our lap time,” said Khairul.

He added, “So we will start the race from grid 10. It’s not ideal but we still stand a chance to get in front if I can get off with a rocket start. Also it is very important to be consistent in every lap. Hopefully we can get good results tomorrow.”
