Four Malaysian Golfers Qualify For Olympics

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will be sending four representatives to compete for the first time in golf at the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to be held from Aug 5 till Aug 21.

The four made the cut after being placed among the 60 players shortlisted on merit, by the International Golf Federation, late on Monday.

Two of them are two-time Asian Tour champion Danny Chia who is placed 46, and 22-year-old Gavin Kyle Green, placed 60, who will compete in the men’s category, according to IGF’s official website,

Malaysia’s top woman golfer Kelly Tan, and 25-year-old Michelle Koh clinched their tickets in the women’s category after being placed 39th and 57th, respectively.

Golf which has returned to the Olympics after 112 years lost its sparkle when the world’s four best players including world number one, Australia’s Jason Day withdrew in the face of the Zika virus threat.

United States’ world number two and three, Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth, and Northern Ireland’s world number four, Rory McIlroy also declined to participate. – Bernama
