TANJONG KARANG – Four people drowned and three others went missing after a boat carrying 14 people capsized near here
during a ritual to sprinkle the ashes of a dead relative in the sea last night, according to the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department.
Its assistant director, Mohd Sani Harul, said the mishap happened at 7.05 pm near a buoy about two nautical miles off the Bagan Sungai Kajang beach.
Twelve fire and rescue personnel deployed to the area recovered the bodies of three women and a man while fishing vessels rescued six men and a woman, he said in a WhatsApp message to Bernama.
“Three men are missing. The boatman, who was among those rescued, is in critical condition and has been sent to the Sungai Buloh Hospital,” he said.
The recovered bodies had been handed over to the police, he said, adding that it had yet to be ascertained how the boat capsized.
Mohd Sani said the operation to look for the missing men resumed today, with the help of the police and Department of Civil Defence personnel. – Bernama
