KOTA BARU: A member of the Kelantan royal household and a grandmother were among four people detained for allegedly selling Datukships for RM60,000 to RM129,000.

At least eight people had become victims of their scam, said state police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mazlan Lazim.

“The syndicate provided the ceremonial attire, royal emblems and award letters to the victims,” he said.

“The investiture ceremony was held at a hotel here and other locations that had not been sanctioned by the Kelantan royalty or state government,” DCP Mazlan told a press conference at the state police contingent yesterday.

DCP Mazlan said the suspects, aged between 51 and 63, were arrested during raids here and in Selangor on Sunday.

The syndicate, he said, was believed to have been active for more than a year.

He said the syndicate’s modus oprandi was to make the offers to unsuspecting buyers in Selangor while the “documentation process” was done in Kelantan.“The matter came to light after one of the victims approached the media to highlight his quandary over the false Datukship offered by the syndicate.”He said the syndicate also sold the idea that there was no quota for the Datukship awards from the Kelantan Royal Relatives Association.

DCP Mazlan said the suspects are being investigated for cheating.
