SHAH ALAM – Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali said for now the State Legislative Assembly was settling for just one Deputy Speaker post and that DAP’s demand that one of its assemblyman be given an additionl Deputy Speaker post will be discussed at the next meeting of the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) Leadership Council.
“Yes there has been a proposal on the additional Deputy Speaker post from the DAP but I feel something new like this must be discussed by the PR Leadership Council before a decision is made,” he told reporters when met at the State Assembly lobby here today.
He also denied the post had been promised to the DAP by the PR Leadership Council.
Prior to this, Selangor DAP secretary Ng Suee Lim was reported to have said that the second deputy speaker post should be given to a DAP assemblyman in view of the party’s loyal support to PKR and PR when the state was embroiled in a crisis on a change in menteri besar that lasted over five months.
Ng had claimed that all it needed to create the second deputy speaker post was an amendment to the state constitution with the agreement of the partners in PR, which are DAP, PKR and PAS.
The Deputy Speaker post is held by Mohd Shafie Ngah, the PAS assemblyman for Bangi. The Speaker’s post is held by Hannah Yeoh, the DAP assemblyman for Subang Jaya.
The menteri besar (MB) crisis ended when Azmin took over as the new MB from Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim on Sept 23. – BERNAMA
