Focus On Grassroots Issues, Not On Next Party Polls

PETALING JAYA – Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein does not want any issues arising from the party polls last year to dominate this year’s Umno General Assembly scheduled to be held end of this month.

Instead, he said focus should be given to the motions, suggestions and issues from the grassroots to ensure the party’s survival in the new political landscape.

“This year’s general assembly is vital in determining the party’s direction and approach, which should be in line with the current situation, because we cannot survive forever without going through the assessment process according to the change of time and the people’s aspiration.”

Hishammuddin said this in his keynote address at the Round Table Conference on Umno General Assembly’s motions here today.

Umno General Assembly 2014 is scheduled to be held from Nov 25 to 29.

Hishammuddin, who is also the chairman of the general assembly’s motions committee, said Umno delegates have a better platform to raise party polls-related issued at the special general assembly to be held next year or in 2016.

“The next party polls will only be held after the 14th general election, so let’s just use the time we have now to focus on grassroots issues,” he said.

The roundtable conference was held to scrutinise and strengthen the drafts of motions to be tabled at the general assembly this year.

It was attended by 130 experts in economic, religious and educational issues, including Umno Supreme Council members Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the committee’s vice-chairman, Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom (chairman of the religious motion sub-committee) and Tan Sri Jamaluddin Jarjis (chairman of economic motion sub-committee).

Yesterday, Hishammuddin said Umno headquarters had received 755 motions from 191 Umno divisions nationwide, comprising 638 motions for reference and 117 motions without debate.

Of the total, 121 motions were on education, followed by politics (87), amendment of party constitution (81), religion (74), economy (67) social issues (170) and others (38). – BERNAMA
