LA PAZ – A state of emergency has been declared in the western Bolivian city of Guanay, where about 300 families have been affected by flooding, but no injuries or deaths have occurred, media reports said on Sunday.

The mayor’s office issued a state of emergency declaration on Saturday in Guanay, located 256 kilometres (159 miles) from La Paz.

The Mapiri, Tipuani and Challana rivers overflowed their banks, unleashing floodwaters that rose to two to three meters (6.5 to nearly 10 feet) in the city, Mayor Roger Tintaya said.

City officials, police officers and army troops are helping flood victims, who were forced to move to higher ground or the upper stories of houses, Tintaya told Erbol radio.

The communities of Santa Rosa and Candelaria, located outside Guanay, have also been affected by flooding, Tintaya said.

Guanay is in a subtropical region near the Pilon Lajas nature preserve and Indian reservation in La Paz province. – BERNAMA
