KUALA LUMPUR – Five Malaysians advanced to the quarterfinals of four different categories in the 2014 Korean Open Badminton Grand Prix (GP) at the Jeonju Indoor Badminton Court.
According to the Badminton World Federation website www.bwfbadminton.org, Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin (pic) and Tan Kian Meng moved into the men’s singles quarterfinals while Lim Khim Wah/Ow Yao Han booked their place in the men’s doubles competition, Vivian Hoo Kah Mun/Ng Hui Lin (women’s doubles) and Wong Fai Yin/Chow Mei Kuan mixed doubles.
Iskandar booked his berth after disposing fellow countryman Goh Soon Huat, 21-17, 21-11 while Kian Meng edged another fellow countryman, Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif, 21-16, 13-21, 21-17 to make his mark.
Khim Wah-Yao Han remained the sole representative in the men’s doubles after defeating Chung Eui Seok/Lee Sang Joon from the host country, 21-19, 16-21, 21-14 after a three-set thriller.
Unlike their male counterparts, Kah Mun-Hui Lin had it easy against another pair from the host nation, Choi Yoon Jung/Han Yong Joo, emerging with a 21-12, 21-15 win in the women’s doubles.
Mixed doubles pair Fai Yin-Mei Kuan defeated Taiwan’s Chia Pin Lu/Szu Yu Chen 21-18, 21-16 to book their berth while the country’s leading mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Ng Hui Lin suffered a shocking 21-23, 15-21 defeat at the hands of Kim Duck Young/Yoo Hae Won from South Korea.
The Korea Open GP offers US$50,000 (RM166,760) as prize money. – Bernama
