KANGAR: Five Malaysians were sentenced to a 50-year imprisonment each by the Bangkok Criminal Court in Thailand after they were found guilty of credit card scam.
All the accused, Francis Xavier Arulappan, 35, Mageswaran Balakrishnan, 23, Velanraj Vallanrasen, 22, Gunalan Kumaresan, 25, and Kartik Sinansamy, 25, were found guilty of using the cloned credit cards belonging to tourists to withdraw cash from several banks in the country.
The accused, together with their accomplices who are still at large, had produced 705 counterfeit credit cards through skimming tactic between April 2 and Apr 26, 2009.
They were guilty of using the cloned credit cards 142 times in a number of provinces such as Krabi, Trang and Songkhla.
The five were detained by the Thai police after they withdrew 500,000 Bhat (RM50,000) in April and were subsequently charged in July.
The Court also ordered them to compensate RM50,000 to the bank where they had withdrawn using the forged credit card.-NST
