IPOH – A fishing outing at a disused mining pond at Taman Rasi, Menglembu here yesterday turned into a tragedy when a boy drowned while his brother is still missing and is also feared to have suffered the same fate.
Pasir Puteh Fire and Rescue Senior Assistant Superintendent Ismail Darus said the body of Lee Poh Wei, 16, was found at 5.56pm while his brother Poh Jun, 14, had yet to be found.
He said the boys, who lived in Bukit Merah, Lahat had gone fishing at the pond together with a friend at 2pm.
He said Poh Jun’s line got stuck and when he tried to reel it in, he slipped and fell into the pond.
Seeing what had happened, he said Poh Wei dived into the pond in trying to rescue his brother but was also feared to have drowned.
He added that the friend also tried to help but could not and subsequently alerted the police.
He said a search team comprising 39 members from the police, Fire and Rescue Department and Rakan Cop found Poh Wei’s body stuck at the bottom of the pond.
Poh Wei’s body was sent to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital here.
