KOTA KINABALU: Some 400 people became homeless when their houses were destroyed in a morning fire at the notorious Kg Pondo water village in Pulau Gaya off the city.

About 50 squatter houses were razed after a fire broke out from one of the wooden structures at about 7am on Monday.

Kg Pondo is among the squatter colonies that are known for criminal activities such as drugs, theft and fighting.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department public relation officer Mohd Affendy K. Ramin said no one was injured in the fire though it spread very fast through the adjoining houses.

“We are still investigating the cause of the fire and estimating the losses,” he said.

Affendy said the fire was brought under control by 7.59am.
