HO CHI MINH CITY – A fire broke out early Friday at a 20-storey luxury apartment building in this capital city of Vietnam, killing 13 people and injuring 14, China’s Xinhua news agency reported.
The Fire Police Department said the fire started just after midnight in the basement of Carina Plaza building where many cars and motorcycles were parked.
Firemen managed to put out the fire in about two hours and rescued hundreds of residents but some people might still been trapped inside the building, said an officer from the Fire Department.
Many residents jumped off the building to escape the fire. A woman lost her life after slipping from the 19th storey, according to witnesses.
One of the residents, Le Thi Vang told reporters, “I was sleeping on the second floor when I suddenly heard a loud explosion and saw thick smoke everywhere.
‘’I did not know where to run, so I jumped through the window and down to the ground,” she said.
Carina Plaza consists of three blocks of 14 to 20 storey buildings and come equipped with shopping and entertainment centres and over 700 apartment units.
It sits on an area of over 19,000 square metres on Vo Van Kiet Street in District 8, Ho Chi Minh City. – BERNAMA
