KUALA TERENGGANU – A 31-year-old shop assistant from Johor was fined RM80,000 today for trafficking 1,000 cartons of counterfeit cigarettes worth RM7,000.
Mohd Rafiq Abd Rashid is facing a six-month jail term should he failed to settle the fine.
Magistrate Abdul Hayyi Salim delivered the sentence after the accused pleaded guilty to the offence under Section 135 (1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967.
Abd Rashid was charged with ferrying the prohibited item in a van at Jalan Sultan Muhamad here at 12.30am on July 4.
Prosecuting officer from the Terengganu Customs Department Md Safrizal Mohd Safian appeared for the prosecution while the accused was not represented. -NST
