KULIM – A 43-year-old market trader and her family with disabled children are having sleepless nights from the constant harassment of loan sharks.
M. Mariyamma, who sells prayer items with her husband, 42, claimed to have settled a loan taken in February but loan sharks are still harassing her for more money.
“I fear for my family’s life. They’ve been sending notes to my house and SMSes to my handphone, and they even threaten to burn my house down.
“The harassment has been going for the past two months, I sometimes feel like I’m being followed when I go out,” she said when met at home yesterday.
Mariyamma and her husband S. Nathan, who lost his job following an accident in 2011, have five children and three of them are disabled.
She added that they took the loan as they were facing financial difficulties at the time.
“I am willing to meet up with them so that we can settle the matter,” she said.
Two police reports were lodged at the Kulim High Tech Park police station in September and yesterday.
Kulim OCPD Supt Abdullah Arshad said they were investigating the case as criminal intimidation.
Their 14-year-old daughter suffers from cerebral malformation, while another daughter, who is 21, suffers from a respiratory problem. Their 22-year-old daughter suffers from a speech impairment.
The family’s plight was highlighted in The Star in 2007 and 2014. – The Star Online
