IPOH – Diver Cheong Jun Hoong’s parents may not have been in Rio de Janeiro when their daughter won a silver medal in the women’s 10m Platform with Pandelela Rinong but their prayers had always accompanied their eldest child.
Jun Hoong’s mother Leow Lai Kuan, 50, said although she had not met her daughter for almost a year due to her busy training and competition schedule, she had always been in touch through social media and hand phone.
“Thanks to the advanced technology, I am able to talk and see my daughter via video calls or WhatsApp. Though we were in touch regularly, we did not contact her before the 10m Platform final because we did not want to disrupt her concentration.
“I have always prayed for her success and advised her to focus on her training and concentrate on the task ahead. I have also advised her to be calm when facing crucial moments and not accumulate unnecessary pressure,” she told reporters at her residence here today.
Pandelela and Jun Hoong delivered Malaysia’s first medal at the Rio Olympics by winning a silver medal in the women’s 10m platform synchronised diving after accumulating 344.34 points from five dives at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre.
For Jun Hoong, 26, the silver medal win was a big relieve since she had blamed herself for messing up her fourth dive in the women’s 3m springboard synchronised diving with partner Nur Dhabitah Sabri which resulted in Malaysia missing a bronze medal.
Lai Kuan said though she was sad to see Jun Hoong miss a bronze medal in the 3m Springboard, the whole family did not lose hope and stayed up all night to watch her in action.
Jun Hoong’s younger brother Cheong Jun Yeng, 23, said though the whole family had stayed awake all night, they could not sleep after watching Jun Hoong receive her medal because they were overjoyed and excited.
“We also received many phone calls, including from the media. Our house phone did not stop ringing after my sister’s achievement,” he said.
Jun Yeng said he was able to contact Jun Hoong at about 10am and realised that she was very happy and excited. – BERNAMA
