SEREMBAN – Fire broke out on the locomotive of Express Rakyat, about a kilometre from the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) Sungai Gadut Station near here this evening.
In the 2.35pm incident, the train driver sustained mild injuries on the fingers while the 309 passengers were unhurt.
Negeri Sembilan Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis said the Express Rakyat was heading to Butterworth, Penang from Johor Baharu when the fire broke out.
“The fire was triggered after the engine broke down. Eighty per cent of the engine and the driver’s compartments were damaged.
“A team of firemen in three engines from the Seremban, Senawang and Rembau fire departments prevented the blaze from spreading to the coaches before the fire was put out in 10 minutes,” he said in a statement here today.
He said passengers who were evacuated from the train had to walk back to the KTMB Sungai Gadut Station.
A total 21 firemen and three fire engines from the Seremban, Senawang and Rembau Fire and Rescue stations were in the JBDP team, he added. – BERNAMA
