KUALA LUMPUR – A compilation of essays in a book titled ‘His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Shah Reflections and Recollections’ has been seen as an affirmation of the importance of integrity, which will not provide any immunity to misconduct, abuse of power and corruption.
Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah said those essays contained the writers’ analysis relating to the relevancy of the institution of monarchy in the modern era.
“In the democratic environment which demands the practice of transparency and openness, the essay collection affirms the importance of integrity, which will not provide any immunity to anyone to misconduct, abuse of power and corruption.”
He said this at the launch of the book graced by Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah here today.
The 265-page book contained essays authored by 28 individuals, comprising mostly Sultan Nazrin’s personal acquaintances, and published by RNS Publications in conjunction with His Majesty’s enthronement as the 35th Sultan of Perak on May 6.
Among the individuals were former journalist and politician Tan Seri Abdullah Ahmad and social activist Dr Chandra Muzzafar.
“In a subtle and dignified way, the writers, in their essays, in line with their words of recognition, expressed hope that I would play a role to inject a dynamic breath to the institution of monarchy so that the institution will be accepted as being relevant and functional in the era of modernisation based on democratic practices,” Sultan Nazrin said.
He said all input and suggestions from the book would become the mirror for him to improve all weaknesses and imperfections, be it on his personality traits or the institution of monarchy.
“The hopes are high, the responsibilities are heavy. I can never do this alone.
“I believe with the consent and roles played by Paduka Kekanda (Sultan of Selangor), who has more experience and has gained a lot of wisdom, all efforts to achieve those hopes and aspirations could be done collectively with the cooperation from all the Malay rulers in the country,” he said.
Also present was Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim and Sultan Nazrin’s mother, Tuanku Bainun. – BERNAMA
