TELUK INTAN – An employer was charged in the Sessions Court, here, today with hiring 21 illegal immigrants to work in a company’s frozen-food processing factory..
The accused, Leong Siew Seong, 42, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge read to him in Mandarin before judge Norita Mohd Ardani.
According to the charge sheet, Leong who is a director of Hup Soon Frozen Food Sdn Bhd, was charged with committing the offence at the Chandan Raya Industrial Area in Menglembu, Kinta by hiring 21 immigrants who were without valid passes, to work at the factory, which was raided at 9.20am on July 1.
He was charged under Section 55(3) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, which provides for a jail term of not less than six months and not exceeding five years, or with whipping, upon conviction.
Judge Norita allowed the accused, who was represented by lawyers Fey Aqis Mohd Khairuddin and Yee Siu Kai, bail of RM25,000 and set Sept 5 for case mention. – BERNAMA
