KUALA LUMPUR – Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim today defended the Election Commission (EC) as an independent and a fearless body.
He also refuted Anthony Loke’s (DAP-Seremban) claim that the EC was afraid to reappoint assistant registrars to represent the political parties as there was a political agenda.
The EC’s action was to streamline the duties of assistant registrars, he said when winding up the debate on the Supply Bill 2015 in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Loke then stood up and defended his contention that the EC should not end the service of assistant registrars as the opposition parties had helped to increase the number of voters.
Shahidan, however, said that at the moment, the EC was streamlining the tasks of assistant registrars.
“We are only putting on hold the representatives of political parties but with regard to non-governmental organisations and other parties, it is still on. Please be patient,” he said. – BERNAMA
