KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian squash queen Datuk Nicol David suffered another defeat at the semifinal stage to Egypt’s Nour El Sherbini in the Qatar Classic held at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha, yesterday.
The 32-year-old, who was the tournament’s second seed, was forced to play in a five set match which lasted for 60 minutes.
According to the championship’s twitter feed, @QCsquash, El Sherbini started off strongly by winning the first set 11-6 but Nicol as the defending champion, regained her composure and clinched the next two sets 12-10, 11-5.
The 2009 Under-19 World Junior Squash champion fought back to level the score at 2-2 by winning the fourth set 11-4 to force the outcome to be decided by a fifth set.
The deciding game was a closely fought encounter but El Sherbini emerged victorious with a 11-9 score to set up a clash against England’s Laura Massaro who beat El Sherbini’s compatriot Omneya Abdel Kawy 11-7, 11-4, 11-6.
