PUTRAJAYA – The Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry will provide water pumps to farming areas that may be affected by the El Nino phenomenon, said its minister, Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.
He said the hot and dry weather caused by the El Nino phenomenon would adversely affect crops, especially those which needed a lot of water, like padi and durian.
He told this to reporters after delivering his new year message to staff of the ministry at Wisma Tani here today.
The Meteorological Department recently announced that the current hot and dry weather in Perlis and Kedah is expected to be felt in across the peninsula between end of January and March this year.
A similar condition is also expected in Sabah, as well as Limbang and Miri in Sarawak until the first quarter of this year.
Meanwhile, in his speech, Ahmad Shabery hoped the agriculture insurance or crop insurance to protect farmers from losses resulting from damaged crops due to natural disaster to be carried out this year.
He said such an insurance scheme was available in developed countries like the United States of America, and also in Indonesia and the Philippines. – BERNAMA
