in Latest/Sports

BERA – Malaysia may have its first golf academy to train new talents in the sport with a proposal to build the facility at the Bera District Council Golf Course, said Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.

He said the ministry would study the suitability of the course, located about seven kilometres from Bera town, for the purpose, following an offer from Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is also Bera Member of Parliament.

Mahdzir said he would also instruct the ministry’s director of sports, Dr Mehander Sigh, to study and discussed the matter with Bera district officer Datuk Razihhan Adzharuddin.

“We have students playing golf at the state level and every year we have about 30 students sent to a camp in Kuala Lumpur during the school holidays for training, but we have yet to have a special academy for golf,” he told reporters after opening the Bera UMNO Wanita, Youth and Puteri delegates meeting here today.

Also present were Bera UMNO divisional leaders, comprising  Ismail Sabri (division leader),  Sabariah Saidan (Wanita), Mohd Zoolihsan Ahmad (Youth) and Salmiah Ab Rahman (Puteri).

Earlier, Ismail Sabri, in his speech, offered the use of the Bera District Council Golf Course to the Education Ministry as the facility was seldom used and also due to its location, which is far from the federal capital.

He said it would be appropriate to set up a gold academy there as it is near a boarding school. – BERNAMA
