Educate Muslim Women On ‘Aurat’ Concept, Group Says

in Latest/Woman

The jilboob, a fashion banned in Indonesia which combines tight-fitting clothing with the Muslim woman’s headcover, is becoming the rage among young “bosomy” women in Malaysia. And this has got religious authorities here worried, reported Harian Metro.

The fashion was cheekily coined from the word jilbab, the long robe covering the head worn by Muslim women.

The issue was discussed on Monday night at a Jakim meeting on issues affecting Muslim women (PWISI). However, there was no decision to emulate the fatwa issued by the Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) on the matter.

International Islamic University of Malaysia rector Datuk Seri Prof Dr Zaleha Kamaruddin, who heads PWISI, said the jilboob could lead to confusion over what Islam allowed women to wear.

However, she said, it was more important to educate young Muslims on the importance of covering the aurat (parts of the body not supposed to be exposed in public) rather than to take the same stand as MUI.

Among others who attended the PWISI meeting were representatives from the Muslim Women’s Action Organisation, the Open University of Malaysia and syariah lawyers.-Asia News Network
