KUALA TERENGGANU – The Eastern Region Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has succeeded in arresting 274 foreign fishermen for illegal fishing in the region from January to May this year.
MMEA Eastern Region director Maritime first admiral Datuk Zulkarnain Omar said from the total, 30 boats were detained in Pahang waters, 33 in Terengganu waters and 16 in Kelantan waters.
“Upon inspection, most of the foreign fishing boats were from Vietnam and they have been using fake permits and licences to fish in Malaysian waters.
“We are confident the arrest would yield catches worth millions of ringgit,” he told reporters after apprehending three Vietnamese fishing boats in Terengganu waters yesterday
Zulkarnain said from the 274 Vietnamese fishermen caught, 172 were still in MMEA lockup while the remaining number has been sent to the nearby prison.
He said some of the fishermen even tried to bribe MMEA personnel and their cases would be sent to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission for further investigation. – BERNAMA
