BESUT: A young female Dutch tourist was assaulted by a snatch thief who stole her handbag at Pulau Perhentian on Saturday.
Chantal van Wonderen, 22, who was vacationing with a friend, said she was on her way to a coffee shop on the island when she was accosted by a man wielding a sharp object.
The victim put up a struggle and was slashed on her head by the man, who then fled with her handbag, which contained RM125 in cash, important documents and bank cards.
She received five stitches for her head wound, said District police chief Superintendent Mohd Zamri Mohd Rowi.
“The victim received outpatient treatment at the Pulau Perhentian Health Clinic, before lodging a report at the Kampung Raja police station.
“Police arrested a 34-year-old man at his house in Kuala Besut at 10pm on the same day,” he added.
Mohd Zamri said that the suspect tested positive for methamphetamine and is being remanded for six days at the station’s lock-up.
The case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for causing hurt during a robbery. -NST
