JERLUN – The criticism by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was made because of the former’s love for the country’s present leadership.
Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir said the criticism by Dr Mahathir was aimed at giving Najib the strength following the various challenges facing the country of late.
“I want to convince Datuk Seri (Najib), and I think Datuk Seri is also aware that the criticism by my father, Tun Mahathir, is made out of love and intended to give strength to Datuk Seri.
“Based on your own statements, Datuk Seri, I believe Datuk Seri understands this,” he said at the opening of the Jerlun Umno delegates meeting by the prime minister, here yesterday.
Prior to this, Dr Mahathir, through his blog, www.chedet.cc , said he had to withdraw support for Najib and criticised his leadership because his policies and actions were ineffective.
Dr Mahathir said going by the current situation, Najib’s leadership should improve and he had to withdraw support for him so that Najib could learn from it.
Mukhriz, who is also Jerlun Umno divisional head, said only those who loved a person would criticise the person concerned with the intention of making the person to correct mistakes that had been made.
“This is a manifestation of support which is sincere for a leader. The support from this category is what I need because, I also have to admit, I do not have the wisdom in administering this state. This kind of sincere support also gives strength to a leader. If we don’t love a person, why bother to criticise the person.
“Another category of support is that which causes one’s downfall. This kind of support is laced with sweet words that put leaders on cloud nine, when in reality, the situation is like a bad dream.
“This is dangerous for leaders and I hope I am not surrounded by supporters of this category,” he added.
Mukhriz said the state Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders would remain loyal to the party struggle, as well as sincere in their support for Najib.
“This pledge of support that we made is from the first category, that is sincere in giving views, as well as criticism, if needed, aimed at giving Datuk Seri the strength.
“I wish to say that Kedah BN will continue to strive to maintain the people’s support so that the mandate given to us remains in our hands,” he added. – Bernama
