PUTRAJAYA – Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will set up a new party and which will join a new opposition pact in facing the 14th General Election.
He said the new party would be formed as the current opposition parties available are “not attractive”.
“Therefore, there is a need for a new party to be formed to represent (the) people who are not yet in the (opposition) coalition but share the same objective to join the new party,” he said after holding a meeting with Pakatan Harapan leader and several former UMNO leaders at the Perdana Leadership Foundation, here today.
Dr Mahathir said the new party, which is yet to be named, would be formed in the near future.
“I will be among the founding members for this new party but not necessarily as the president… (and) not necessarily (as) the candidate for prime minister,” he said.
As for the new pact, Dr Mahathir said parties such as DAP, PKR and Parti Amanah Negara would also join and cooperate as a team in the 14th General Election.
“We have agreed with the ‘cease fire’ proposal between us. We have also agreed to coordinate to move as a supreme body in carrying out our efforts from now until the (general) elections,” he said.
As one of the founding members for the new party and pact, Dr Mahathir had dismissed suggestions that he would contest in the next general election. – BERNAMA
