KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali paid a visit to Dataran Merdeka, hours after the former prime minister told a crowd in Johor that he was thinking of joining the Bersih 4 rally.
The couple arrived at the square at about 7.30pm and were greeted by hundreds of protesÂters.
Asked if he agreed with the protesters’ deÂÂmands, Dr Mahathir simply smiled and waved to the crowd.
Asked why he came to the rally, he said he “just wanÂted to seeâ€.
Many rushed forward to greet him the moment they realised that it was Dr Mahathir, sparking a frenzy of snapshots and video-filming.
Many were heard shouting: “Don’t push, don’t push.â€
At one point, his bodyguards had to keep the surging crowds at bay.
The couple walked a short distance but left after 10 minutes and were escorted to a police car that took them towards Jalan Parlimen. – The Star
