CAMERON HIGHLANDS – Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Monday chaired the Cameron Highlands flash floods and landslides special meeting for the third time here.
Muhyiddin, who arrived here in the morning for a one-day visit, started the meeting at 10 am in the Cameron Highlands Land and District Office, Tanah Rata, which lasted for three hours.
Also present were Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri G.Palanivel, who is also Cameron Highlands Member of Parliament; Energy, Green Technology and Water Datuk Seri Maximus Ongkili; Human Resource Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot; Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim; Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob and Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, Armed Forces Chief General Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin, Attorney General Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Patail and Civil Defence Department director-general Datuk Zaitun Ab Samad also attended the meeting.
Muhyiddin presented aid to flash flood and landslide victims after the meeting ended.
The Cameron Highlands flash floods and landslides special meeting aimed at discussing and addressing the flash floods and landslides disaster issues in Cameron Highlands to avoid the loss of lives and destruction of properties as well as ensure the safety and welfare of the people there.
The latest incident occurred last Nov 5 when the residents on the banks of Sungai Bertam were asked to move after the Sultan Abu Bakar dam water was released following rising water level due to rains.
Pekan Ringlet was hit by flash floods when the nearby river broke its bank after an hour of rain.
The incident claimed five lives while another five were injured.
Land encroachment was said to be among the factors that caused floods and landslides in the highland. – BERNAMA
