GEORGE TOWN – Hours of downpour in the wee hours of Sunday caused flash floods, traffic jams and falling trees in several areas in Penang.
Traffic was reported slow along the stretch of Jalan Masjid Negri and came to a standstill at Jalan Scotland.
Other flooded places included Jalan P. Ramlee, Taman Lumba Kuda and Jalan Air Itam.
Trees were uprooted at Perak Road in Jelutong, damaging a car and a house.
A falling tree also hit a few cars parked along a road in a residential area in Taman Pekaka, Sungai Dua.
Water level at Sungai Pinang in Jalan P. Ramlee and Sungai Air Itam in Jalan Scotland had exceeded the danger level, according to the Department of Irrigation and Drainage website.
As of 9am, water level at Sungai Pinang reached 2.72m, while water level at Sungai Air Itam recorded 6.91m at 9.15am.
Residents staying at low-lying areas near the two rivers have been told to be cautious of flash floods. – The Star Online
