Don’t Look For Cheap Publicity Seeking Sponsors

KUANTAN – Football associations in the country are reminded that they should find companies which are serious and committed in the issue of sponsorship for sports and not choose those merely seeking cheap publicity.

Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said, admittedly, it was difficult to find a sponsor for sports but the matter must be given attention to avoid problems later.

He said among problems feared was the failure of fully fulfilling the conditions of sponsorship after the agreement had been signed, following the financial incapability of the sponsor.

“So, in looking for a sponsor, look for ones with the financial means. We don’t want to sign an agreement, only to find later the sponsor is not able to fulfill the obligations later,” he said when commenting on a new phenomenon in the country’s football scene when a Cosmetics company came forward to sponsor a football teams in the Premier and Super Leagues.

Among them included Syarikat Vida Beauty Sdn Bhd which is owned by renowned cosmetics entrepreneur Datuk Seri Dr Hasmiza Othman or better known as Datuk Seri Vida who sponsored the Kelantan team for RM16 million.

Another cosmetics entrepreneur Datuk Aliff Syukri Kamarzaman, who owns Syarikat D’Herbs Holdings (M) Sdn Bhd was also reported to be considering sponsoring the Selangor team.

Syarikat Kosmetik Megah Perawan was also planning to sponsor PKNS FC to a tune of millions.

Commenting on the scenario, Tengku Abdullah said it was a good development and could help boost the image of national football.

“We laud any individual and companies keen to sponsor state football teams, it is up to the teams whether to accept or otherwise,” he said.

He said it was too early to determine whether the sponsorship from cosmetics companies was capable of changing the landscape of football in the country. – BERNAMA
