GEORGE TOWN – Folks knew fuel prices are up for the week, but some had a shock when they bought petrol at RM4.09 per litre!
It turned out to be an honest mistake. Shell stations nationwide had an issue when they updated the prices in their computer system at midnight yesterday.
Their prices were set to RM4.09 per litre of RON95 petrol and RM4.65 per litre of RON97. The price for the week until next Wednesday is RM2.08 for RON95 and RM2.36 for RON97.
Alert customers checked with the cashier counter and embarrassed station managers immediately refunded them and apologised profusely.
Many took photos of their receipts and posted them on social media. These went viral.
Shell has made a public statement and apologised.
It said the error was rectified immediately but 160 transactions were made in those prices between midnight and 1.30am.
“If you had filled up at any of our stations during that time, please kindly check your receipt and do bring it back to the station where you made the purchase for reimbursement of the difference,” the statement added.
Penang Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry also issued a statement on Facebook yesterday, confirming the glitch, after checking 48 Shell stations in the state.
Ministry state director Mohd Nawardi Saad advised those who refuelled shortly after midnight yesterday to check their receipts and return to the stations for a refund. – The Star Online
