Don’t Be Deceived By ‘Martydom’ Term In Fighting For I.S.

KOTA BHARU – Muslims in the country have been advised not to be deceived by the term, “mati syahid” (dying as martyrs), if they are killed in fighting along with the Islamic State (IS) militant group in Syria.

Kelantan mufti Datuk Mohamad Shukri Mohamad said those who joined the militant group and died fighting in Syria could not be categorised as martyrs.

“How can you call it ‘mati syahid’ when Muslims get killed when they fight  their brethren? But if Muslims get killed fighting against non-Muslims (in defence of Islam), then you can call it ‘mati syahid’,” he said when met by reporters after the state assembly sitting at Kota Darul Naim, here, today.

Mohamad Shukri urged Musims not to join the IS militant group as its actions were against Islamic teachings and Islamic law.

“Not just IS, but any group that is regarded as extremist because joining them is forbidden in Islam.

“The way in Islam is moderation and following the rules,” said the mufti, who also advised parents to monitor their children’s movements and to know who they were mixing with to prevent them from joining such militant groups.

In a Bernama report yesterday, Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, the principal assistant director of the Counter Terrorism Division, Bukit Aman Special Branch, was quoted as saying that Malaysian girls were being aggressively recruited for the militant group in strife-torn Syria.

Ayob Khan said the individuals carrying out the recruitment drive just through Facebook were targeting school students as they were more easily deceived.

He said the religious authorities should issue an official fatwa (edict) as what had been done by most Arab countries including Saudi Arabia, declaring it as haram (forbidden in Islam) for their people to do jihad in turbulent countries, particularly Syria, so as to curb the recruiting of militants to fight in that troubled country. – BERNAMA
