Dengue Cases In Pahang And Penang On The Rise

KUANTAN – Pahang recorded 618 cases of dengue fever for the first two months of this year compared to 201 cases posted in the same period last year – a 200 per cent increase.

Pahang Health director Dr Zainal Ariffin Omar said, two deaths were reported during the period with one each in Bentong and Bera.

“Kuantan recorded the highest number of dengue cases with 427 cases which is 69 per cent of the total reported, followed by Temerloh (76 cases), Jerantut (42), Maran (30), Bera (18), Raub (nine).

“Other areas reported to have dengue cases were Lipis (six), Bentong (five), Pekan (four) and Rompin (one) while Cameron Highlands did not record any dengue case,” he told reporters at a gathering with the media organised by the Pahang Health Department, here today.

Currently, there were six active dengue areas in Pahang with five areas reported to be under control and one categorised as a hotspot namely Taman Pasdec Jaya, Indera Mahkota 2, Kuantan.

This hotspot has recorded eight dengue fever cases during the period.

Meanwhile in GEORGETOWN, dengue cases in the state continued to rise with 1,115 cases reported until Feb 28 compared to 376 cases for the same period last year, an increase of 196.54 per cent.

State Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Rural Development and Health Committee chairman Dr Afif Bahardin said two deaths reported due to dengue fever in the state, unchanged from last year.

“For Penang, during the eighth week from Feb 22 to 28, 105 dengue cases were reported compared to 102 cases for the seventh week (Feb 15 to 21), an increase of three cases or 2.94 per cent,” he said in a statement.

Afif said currently there were 15 dengue areas in the state which were under control, namely Changkat Tembaga, Jalan Lim Lean Teng, Jalan Samak, Jalan Siam, Lengkok Dumbar, Solok Dunlop, Taman Kristal and Taman Manggis in the Timur Laut district.

For the Barat Daya area, the locations were Flat Sri Bayu, Lorong Rajawali, Bandar Baru Teluk Kumbar and Kampung Matahari Naik while in the Seberang Perai Tengah district the hotspot areas were Apartment Permata, Perda and in Seberang Perai Utara, Bagan Ajam and Lintang Mak Mandin, he said. – BERNAMA
