GEORGE TOWN – The move to demolish the remaining houses in Kampung Tanjung Tokong was carried out according to legal procedures and based on a court order said UDA Group managing director Ahmad Abu Bakar.
He said the court also gave UDA permission to develop the village site.
“We are concerned with the problems faced by the residents and in fact the move to demolish the village was postponed several times based on humanitarian grounds,” he said in a statement here last night.
Ahmad said UDA had issued a notice on Nov 8, 2012 when residents did not response to the offer given to them via lawyer notices sent on Dec 12, 2012 and Jan 14, 2013.
He said the villagers were given adequate time to consider the offer before the court notice was issued on June 19, 2013.
“The case of not relocating actually involved several small families and most of them are no longer living in the village,” he said when commenting on the incident involving 200 villagers who attempted to stop workers from demolishing a house in the village at 1pm yesterday. – Bernama
