BUKIT MERTAJAM – The decision by the government to reveal the accounts of 1MDB proves it has nothing to hide, said Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan.
He said the Cabinet supported the efforts of the government to ensure that the accounts of 1MDB were checked and investigated by the National Audit Department, and Public Accounts Committee chaired by Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed.
“The decision shows that there is nothing to hide. There is nothing wrong with 1MDB but accusations against it are still being raised and have gone overboard,” he told reporters after giving a briefing on the Goods and Services Tax (GST) here Sunday.
Ahmad said 1MDB had 13 independent power producers (IPP), namely four in Malaysia and nine abroad which were lucrative assets in terms of business.
It also had a large and strategic piece of land for a new township known as Bandar Malaysia and was in the process of building the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX), he said.
“If something positive is viewed from a negative angle, it becomes negative. But if we retaliate and sue the parties concerned and open the 1MDB accounts, 1MDB’s name will finally be cleaned.
“1MDB is a fully-owned subsidiary of the Finance Ministry which is competitive and progressive but is given a very negative image by the opposition,” he added.
In KUALA LUMPUR, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor urged all quarters to stop hurling accusations against 1MDB as the Auditor-General and the PAC had been asked to look into the case.
He said, before something was decided upon, all parties must understand the situation and give the authorities a chance to investigate.
“The matter is still being investigated and the Cabinet has agreed with the decision of the Prime Minister on the role of the Auditor-General in the matter,” he added.
Tengku Adnan, who is also Umno secretary-general said, the action of the opposition against 1MDB had to a certain extent influenced the people.
“I don’t understand why so much accusations are hurled at 1MDB. But it is only a perception, so let the investigation be carried out,” he told reporters after opening the 2015 Federal Territory Umno Youth Sports Festival today. – BERNAMA
