Decision To Hand Over Pen Drive To MACC Was To Ensure Transparency

REMBAU – Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said his decision to hand over a pen drive given to him by the Tengku Mahkota of Johor (TMJ) Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) showed that he was being transparent in matters involving football development in the country.

The pen drive, purportedly containing evidence of corruption in the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), was handed to the MACC on Friday by Khairy after having received it from TMJ last month. TRANSPARENCY

“I went through the contents in the pen drive and though I know what details it contained, I decided to hand it to the MACC to investigate and reveal the findings.

“When there is public perception that the pen drive contained evidence of corruption in FAM, I had to pass it on to a responsible agency because if I said the pen drive had no details of corruption, the public might not believe me,” he told reporters after launching the Negeri Sembilan state level FIT Malaysia Programme at Dataran Rembau, here today.

Khairy said he would wait for the outcome of the investigations carried out by the MACC.

The controversy surrounding the FAM emerged when TMJ alleged that corruption was rife in the FAM.

TMJ subsequently met Khairy to discuss issues related to football in the country and passed a pen drive that allegedly contained evidence of his accusations and corruption involving FAM officials.

Khairy said he was informed that FAM president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah had decided to step down and a new president would be elected at the FAM Congress that would be held early next year instead of 2018.

He said the new FAM office bearers must close ranks with the players, NGO, sports writers and all stake holders in football to gather feedback and consider their views and recommendations.

“I have no intention to interfere in their (FAM) affairs but will merely offer my views as the Youth and Sports Minister for the betterment of football in the country,” he said. – BERNAMA
