LONDON – Cows could be fitted with fluorescent lights and given hi-viz vests to protect them from speeding motorists at night.
A cow grazing on common land was fatally injured by a car last month.
Previous accidents on Hungerford Common in Berkshire have led to calls for a speed limit reduction.
Civic leaders are now discussing setting up speed monitoring devices on the common, as well as putting lights on the cows.
High visibility tabards are also being considered for the cattle.
Both commoners and farmers, who buy rights to graze their cattle from the Town and Manor of Hungerford, produce a summer grazing herd of about 175 cattle.
Town mayor Martin Crane said: “We’re looking at putting speed monitoring devices on the common.
“But there was also a suggestion they put luminous bands or lights round the cows’ necks.” – Mirror
