KUALA LUMPUR – The counting of votes began at 5pm in the two by-elections today, in Kuala Kangsar, Perak, and Sungai Besar, Selangor.
The counting is being held at the polling centres, 23 in Kuala Kangsar and 28 in Sungai Besar, according to the Election Commission.
After the votes have been counted, the ballot boxes will be brought to the tallying centres, the Silver Jubilee Hall in Kuala Kangsar and Dewan Sri Bernam
in Sungai Besar.
The announcement of the results are expected at about 9pm at the two tallying centres.
The by-elections were held following the deaths of the MPs, Datuk Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad of Kuala Kangsar and Tan Sri Noriah Kasnon of Sungai Besar, in a helicopter crash in Sarawak on May 5.
The Kuala Kangsar by-election was a four-cornered fight among Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar’s widow Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid of Barisan Nasional, Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad of PAS, Prof Dr Ahmad Termizi Ramli of Amanah and Independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary.
The by-election in Sungai Besar was a three-cornered fight that featured Budiman Mohd Zohdi of BN, Dr Abdul Rani Osman of PAS and Azhar Abdul Shukur of Amanah.
The two seats were won by BN in the last general election, in 2013. – BERNAMA
