KOTA KINABALU: Tawau police have detained a foreign woman associated with a group of 10 tourists who stripped and urinated on Mount Kinabalu on May 30.

Acting police chief Supt Kiong Ho Eng was quoted by Bernama as confirming that the woman was detained at Tawau airport Tuesday afternoon when she was about to leave for Kuala Lumpur.

He however declined to elaborate.

Sabah police commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said that he would only talk about it on Thursday June 11 after the monthly police gathering.

On Monday, a 38-year-old European was also detained briefly in connection with the stripping and urinating incident.

Police detained him at the Kota Kinabalu Airport after he arrived from Tawau and planning to head to the Philippines.

He was released after a statement was recorded by police.

After a report was lodged by Sabah Park officials, police began their investigations into the incident under Section 290 of the Penal Code for public nuisance and could face a fine of up to RM400.

The antics of the foreigners angered local Kadazandusun elders who believed it was an insult as they considered the mountain a sacred ground.

Some of them even asked that they be charged in the Native Court.
