BAGAN SERAI – Health experts have always recommended the public to drink young coconut water to maintain body temperature at normal levels especially during hot weather.
But who would have thought that this practice is being followed by 24 orang utans at Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island near here.
According to Orang Utan Island Foundation chief executive officer, Dr D.Sabapathy the animals were given coconut water to drink twice a day to keep them hydrated during this current extreme weather condition.
“Coconut water is a refreshing drink for the orang utan,” he said adding that these active creatures do not sit still and are always roaming freely from one place to another,” he told reporters at Orang Utan Island Saturday.
He said the 24 primates had been on the island since the wildlife conservation was opened in 2000 till today.
In addition to being a tourist destination, the island is a training centre for several universities to conduct research on the orang utan – one of the most endangered Malaysian wildlife species. – BERNAMA
