KUALA LUMPUR – China’s five times world champion Lin Dan dashed Datuk Lee Chong Wei’s hopes of winning his third title of the year when he easily disposed the former world number one in straight sets.

Lin Dan who is also the Olympic champion took just 46 minutes to overcome Chong Wei 21-17, 21-10 in straight sets at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, yesterday.

It was the 24th time Lin Dan has beaten Chong Wei in their 33 meetings since 2004 while the Penang-born has nine wins to his credit.

After losing to current world number one Chen Long of China in the final of the 2015 World Championships recently, Chong Wei was hoping to win his third title of the year after having won the US Open and Canada Open earlier.

Lin Dan who has also won the All-England five times will face fellow countryman Tian Houwei in the quarterfinals tomorrow after the latter pulled off a major upset by beating world champion Chen Long 21-16, 21-17 in another all-Chinese encounter.

The Malaysian camp was however, happy with the feat of the men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong who booked their ticket to the quarterfinals after beating Denmark’s Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen 15-21, 22-20, 21-16.

Malaysia did not send any representative in the women’s singles or women’s doubles for the open that offers US$275,000 (RM1.186 million) as prize money.

In the mixed doubles competition Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying also joined Chong Wei through the exit door after going down 15-21, 18-21 to China’s World Champions Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei.
