ALOR SETAR – National badminton men’s singles ace Datuk Lee Chong Wei is ready to make way for younger players in the semi-finals of the 2018 Badminton Asia Team Championships here.
Chong Wei, who is ranked second in the world, said the challenge would give the younger shuttlers valuable experience for the Thomas Cup finals to take place in Bangkok, Thailand this May.
“I will discuss it with the coaches and manager of the team. Who knows if the coaches want to give the opportunity to the younger players. They can have a real chance to practice for the Thomas Cup.
“In this tournament, we also saw improvements in the performances of Lee Zii Jia and Iskandar (Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin) who despite losing against Thailand, bounced back to beat Myanmar and Taiwan,” he said.
Chong Wei, who has been the country’s first singles choice in tournaments so far, has not disappointed, picking up a point in all the matches so far, and the same goes for Lee Zii Jia, who has been consistent throughout.
In addition to Chong Wei and Zii Jia, Malaysia has Iskandar Zulkarnain and Soong Joo Vern in its line-up of singles players.
Meanwhile, national singles head coach Datuk Misbun Sidek said it was the high spirit of the players in the squad which enabled them to reach the semi-finals of BATC, thus qualifying for the Thomas Cup finals on merit. – BERNAMA
